An example you can verify

Extract lines from a sample containing digital text.

Example input

3-page Kitavio sample PDF.

SettingsPages: 1.

Expected result

Kitavio sample - A1
Fictitious sample. No personal data.
Source A - page 1 of 3

Try these files containing fictitious data:

Download sample · sample-3-pages.pdf

Output contains the first page’s digital text. A scanned PDF without selectable text does not produce that content.

Extract PDF text without uploading the document

Your browser opens the PDF and creates the TXT on your device. Digital text is required: scans without a text layer need OCR. After extraction, check columns, tables and line breaks.

Extract text from PDF: uses and practical guidance

Extracting text from a PDF makes words already stored as document text available for reuse. This can help prepare a quotation, review a report or move paragraphs into another editor. Visible lettering alone is not enough: a scan may show words as pixels without containing recoverable characters. Trying to select a sentence in your PDF reader provides an initial indication of whether the file includes a usable text layer.

Extraction does not perform OCR. A page consisting only of a photograph may yield little text or no text at all. Even with a text layer, internal ordering can differ from the page’s visual reading order. Columns, tables, repeated headings and words broken across line endings require inspection. Do not rely on extracted output without checking the source when the position of a number or the relationship between a label and its value matters.

Copy the result into an editor and compare it with representative pages of the PDF. Inspect accents, symbols, numbers and paragraph boundaries. Continue with text cleaning or comparison tools after retaining a copy of the initial extraction. Plain text does not preserve the document’s visual formatting. Convert a page to an image when its appearance needs to be recorded. Use a separate OCR workflow for scanned lettering and review recognition accuracy rather than assuming this extraction tool can transcribe photographic content.

A practical check before using the result

If a report’s extraction mixes columns, compare a specific paragraph with the visible page before reusing it. Keep source references to correct ordering and verify figures. Check whether repeated headings have entered the text, since they may interrupt sentences even when individual words were recovered correctly.

Settings and limits

Choose a PDF and optionally specify pages or ranges such as 1,3-5. Leave the field blank to process the entire document. Existing digital text is extracted and pages are separated by a form feed. Maximum 25 MB, 250 pages and 2 million output characters. Your document is processed locally.

Frequently asked questions

Does it recognize scanned text or preserve columns?

No OCR is performed. Scans without a text layer may produce empty output. Reading order follows the PDF’s internal content, so columns, tables and line breaks can need manual correction.

Are my data stored on a server?

No. Content and files are processed in your browser without an account. Closing the page loses unsaved results.
