PDF properties and metadata: uses and practical guidance
Inspecting PDF properties helps identify a document before editing or submitting it. You can review the page count, page dimensions and metadata the tool can read. This reveals issues such as a landscape sheet within a portrait report or an internal title that differs from the file name. The name used to save a PDF and the title stored in its metadata are separate values and may describe the same document differently.
Author, subject and keyword fields may be empty, outdated or written by an application. Their presence does not establish who actually created the document. An absent field also does not prove that no additional information exists: other objects and metadata representations may be present without appearing in this inspection. Treat the output as a specific report of accessible properties, rather than a comprehensive privacy assessment or certification of the file’s authenticity.
Compare page dimensions with the intended printing destination before changing margins or rotation. Continue with Edit PDF metadata when a supported title or author field needs correction, then inspect the resulting copy again. Preserve the source for comparison. For signed documents, reviewing properties does not replace signature validation in a suitable PDF reader. A readable author label and an independently verifiable digital signature serve different purposes, so neither should be used as a substitute for the other when deciding whether a document is trustworthy.
A practical check before using the result
A preliminary inspection can compare versions with similar file names. Review page count, dimensions and internal title to identify the intended copy, but open its content as well: matching properties do not imply identical files. Note positions of differently sized pages before editing, since that reference helps later rotation and margin checks. An unexpected author field deserves review before sharing without being treated as definitive provenance evidence. Inspect the final copy after editing to compare which displayed properties changed and which remained. The report supports file identification, while content review completes the practical check.
Settings and limits
