How to number a PDF while leaving its cover unnumbered

Distinguish physical sheets from visible numbers and configure the sequence on the final document.

Physical page versus visible number

A physical page is its position in the file; the visible number is the added text. To leave a cover unnumbered, start at physical page 2 and choose 1 as the starting value.

With a cover at 1 and contents at 2 and 3, start at physical page 4. If a 12-sheet document is numbered from the third sheet, the displayed total is 10: only numbered sheets count.

Choose the format and position

Use the number alone, “Page 1”, “1 of 10” or “Page 1 of 10”. A total helps identify incomplete copies, but you must check which sheets are included in the sequence.

When continuing a sequence from a number other than 1, the total still counts numbered sheets rather than the sequence’s final number. Use Number only or Page 1 for that continuation and avoid a total-based format. A size of 10 to 12 points is usually unobtrusive on A4. Inspect several headers and footers: the tool does not detect signatures, stamps, tables or codes to avoid covering them.

Number after finalizing the order

Reorder, delete or insert pages first. Add numbering afterward; later sequence changes do not correct numbers already drawn on pages.

  1. Select the PDF and check its total.
  2. Configure the first physical page and starting number.
  3. Choose format, position and size.
  4. Check the cover, sequence, total and rotated sheets in the download.

What numbering does not update

It does not create Roman numerals, section-specific styles or automatic contents. It also does not correct references such as “see page 7”. For complex publishing, number in the source document.

It supports up to 500 pages, starting values from 1 to 9999 and sizes from 8 to 24 points. Keep the original and check interactive elements or signatures after modification.

Criteria for reviewing and delivering the result

Define a clear relationship between position and label before numbering. If the cover and contents are excluded, identify which sheet receives the first number. That choice should match references readers will use. For a record, retain a table of sections and their starting labels. Distinguish the new visible sequence from numbering already embedded in the content; both can coexist and require an understandable convention rather than competing unexplained references.

Test placement on sheets with footers, signatures and landscape orientation. Find room where the label is readable without obscuring information. Review the first and last labels and an intermediate page of each type. After rearrangement or a new appendix, generate a coherent sequence from an appropriate source and verify earlier numbers were not overlaid accidentally. Preserve a copy without added labels for future convention changes. The final file should make references to page one and its last page clear to someone uninvolved in preparation. Numbering becomes useful when placement, scope and reference meaning are all verified together.

TRY IT YOURSELF

A cover followed by two numbered sheets

Load the sample, choose physical starting page 2 and starting number 1. Select the Page 1 of N format.

The cover receives no new number. The following sheets show 1 of 2 and 2 of 2: the total covers the sheets you numbered.

Inspect sample labels as well as the added footer. Changing the physical starting sheet without changing the numeric start can produce a different sequence than expected.
