Physical positions start at 1
Odd pages are 1,3,5… and even pages are 2,4,6…. Numbers printed inside sheets may differ when there is an unnumbered cover.
A seven-page document produces four odd and three even pages. A one-page document has no even group; an empty PDF is not created.
Separate and inspect
Choose both groups for a ZIP containing two PDFs, or odd/even only for a single output. Each group retains original order.
- Load the file and check its total.
- Select your group and process.
- Extract the ZIP if you downloaded both groups.
- Check each PDF’s first and last pages.
Manual double-sided printing
Separation cannot determine how to reload paper: printers differ in sides, trays and output direction. Test four pages and mark a corner before printing the full batch.
To alternate the groups again, use Interleave. For patterns other than parity, use Extract. Processing is local and supports up to 500 pages, subject to available memory.
Criteria for reviewing and delivering the result
Parity belongs to file positions rather than the physical sides you imagined while scanning. Check whether an opening cover or separator changes correspondence with printed numbers. Removing a sheet afterwards shifts later positions. Separate the version that will actually be used and do not copy labels uncritically from an earlier file with a different page count. The correct reference is the current input’s sequence.
For manual duplex printing, test a short document with large numbers and an upper edge mark. Observe the first group’s output and the orientation needed when feeding paper again. Feeding and output order depend on the printer, so retain instructions from a successful trial. In downloads, check starting and ending positions and confirm both group counts sum to the source total. If reconstructing fronts and backs, keep both groups and interleave them with a further pairing review. Separating positions is an organizational step; it does not independently resolve physical paper handling or identify absent pages. Verify the whole procedure before using it on a large print batch, especially after a cover or separator has changed.
Separate three sheets into two groups
Load the three-page PDF and choose Both. Download and extract the ZIP.
The odd-pages PDF contains A1,A3 and the even-pages PDF contains A2. The groups have two and one pages respectively.
Check labels rather than file names. To restore the sequence, interleave starting with the odd group.
