How to merge PDFs in the right order

Combine documents, supporting evidence and appendices into an ordered copy, then check it before sharing.

Decide the document order first

Merge PDF places each complete file after the previous one. For an application, you might put the form first, supporting documents second and appendices last. Rename originals so they are easy to recognize in the list.

For separate front-side and back-side scans, interleave pages instead: merging produces A1, A2, B1, B2; interleaving produces A1, B1, A2, B2.

Create the copy step by step

The visible file list determines the output order. Do not assume your device’s file picker supplies files in the order you expected.

  1. Add two or more PDFs and wait for them to load.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to set the final order and remove accidental repetitions.
  3. Select Merge PDF and save the download.
  4. Open the copy and check the first page, each file boundary and the last page.

What to check if something fails

An encrypted, damaged or empty file may not open. Use a valid unprotected copy obtained legitimately. On a phone with limited memory, work in smaller batches.

Originals are preserved and processing takes place in your browser. Check forms, links, annotations and signatures: copying pages may change special features even when the appearance is correct.

Criteria for reviewing and delivering the result

For a submission containing several appendices, write a sequence outside the tool first. Record each document’s purpose and decide whether its entire contents belong in the delivery. A repeated cover may add noise, while an identification sheet can provide essential context. Prepare selections before merging and avoid relying solely on names assigned by a scanner. Content based references are more dependable when several files have similar titles or were collected in different sessions.

Verify the exact document you will attach after generation. Count pages, inspect transitions and locate the first and last sheet of every appendix. Check actual bytes when a portal imposes a size limit instead of assuming merging compresses files. Keep the sequence for rebuilding when supporting material changes. Return to the originals, replace the relevant input and review the complete set again. An updated appendix may have a different page count, shifting references recorded for an earlier submission even though the overall order of documents remains the same. The attachment should be checked after the final replacement, not only after the initial trial.

TRY IT YOURSELF

A delivery with a cover and appendices

Open both sample PDFs, put the three-page document first and select Merge PDF. Every sheet has a visible label showing its source.

The final document has five pages: the first file’s three pages followed by the second file’s two pages. Reversing the files in the list reverses those groups in the output.

Check the transition between pages 3 and 4. Correct sideways content before delivery; use Interleave rather than Merge when alternating fronts and backs.
